Other Radical Theater

The Performance Group existed alongside a lot of other interesting, radical theater throughout the nation. Other collective theater groups engaged directly in political topics and explored with form. “A revolutionary challenge to the existing hierarchies of Western political authority” was present in many of the alternative groups at the time, especially the Living Theatre, but also those like the Bread and Puppet Theater, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe (Harding and Rosenthal 5-6). The Bread and Puppet Theater created anti-war pieces that critiqued “the heavy-handed authoritarianism of the U.S. political establishment” and emphasized the possibility of individual humans outside of this system (6). The San Francisco Mime Troupe similarly critiqued issues of class, race, and gender (6).
